Lionel Messi scores twice, Argentina beat France in 2022 World Cup final in penalty drama

Three and a half years ago, that magical night in Lusail. Seeing the World Cup trophy in Lionel Messi's hands, many felt that football had reached perfection! Seven goals in seven matches, two in the final. Along with three assists. It was a natural law for him to win the tournament's 'Golden Ball'. Messi was not only the captain of Argentina, he was more than that. The heartbeat of the team.

But it would be unfair to call the 2022 World Cup champions Argentina only 'Messi's team'. Julián Alvarez, Alexis McAllister and Enzo Fernandez made themselves known on the world stage in a royal manner. Fernandes won the Best Young Player award. Nicolas Otamendi led the defense with indomitable morale. Angel Di Maria was excellent. Emiliano Martinez became a name of terror for the opponent in the penalty shootout.

The way Argentina bounced back after the shock of losing to Saudi Arabia in the first match of the World Cup, the morale, the unity - no other country could match that.

But where does Argentina stand ahead of the 2026 World Cup?
